Discover the capital of Madeira

Funchal is a coastal city on the southern edge of the island. Surrounded by steep hills and lush vegetation.  The city has stunning views and a mild, subtropical climate year-round.

Founded in 1424, Funchal was one of the first European settlements established outside mainland Europe during the Age of Exploration. As it has a strong position and location, it became a key port for trade between Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Over the centuries, the city grew from a port to a thriving city. Thanks to its pleasant weather, scenic landscapes, and rich heritage, Funchal has become a favourite tourist destination.

What is the Old Town of Funchal Like?

Funchal Old Town, known locally as Zona Velha, is one of the most culturally rich areas in the city. This historic quarter dates back to the 15th century and gives a glimpse into Funchal’s past through its well-preserved architecture, cobbled streets, and art. If you are searching for authentic experiences and things to do in Funchal, this area is a must-see.

First, visit Rua de Santa Maria, one of the oldest streets in Funchal. Once a residential street, it was revitalised by the Painted Doors Project, which transformed dozens of old doors into colourful works of art by local and international artists. Then, don’t miss the Igreja do Socorro (Church of Socorro), a beautiful 18th-century baroque church located on a small hill overlooking the ocean. From here, you can enjoy panoramic views of the city and harbour. We highly suggest visiting here during sunset!

In addition to its historical and artistic appeal, Funchal Old Town is also known for its lively dining and nightlife scene. Traditional Madeiran restaurants, or tascas, can be found everywhere. Try local specialities like espetada (grilled meat skewers) and bolo do caco (garlic bread). Finally, as evening falls, the area fills with live music, wine bars, and cafés that stay open late.
